CHAPTER 12
Bea smiled at her absentminded father across the breakfast table. He had forgone a neckcloth, which wasn’t unusual in the slightest. However, the Baron’s hair was standing on end, and this was not the norm.
Baron Lyall Loveless’ valet Mr. Peck would be beside himself. Mr. Peck had a devil of a time keeping the Baron in proper form. Never one to care for such things, Bea’s father took to hiding from the man as often as possible.
One would think that the Baron would fire Mr. Peck. And he had tried, several times in fact, but every time his daughter would threaten to hire someone three times as proper to fill poor Mr. Peck’s place.
The Baron was a little afraid of his daughter’s bright persona. He had no idea where Bea’s strong personality had come from. His departed wife had been as gentle as a lamb. And Lyall was more than a bit shy, as Beatrice would say.
When the Baron looked up into his daughter’s amused eyes, he couldn’t help but smile back at her. “Well, what is it, lass? Do I have butter on my nose or jam on my sleeves?”
Bea giggled, “Neither one, Papa. However, your hair seems to be a little awry. Have you seen Mr. Peck this morning?”
“I don’t need that nincompoop molly-coddling me,” the Baron grumbled.
“I will take that as a ‘no’ then,” Bea stood up and crossed to where he was sitting. Smoothing that gray strands into some type of order she leaned down and kissed the top of his head, “Much better, Papa.”
“I liked it the way it was, but thank you just the same,” the Baron muttered, patting her hand affectionately before she went to sit back in her chair. “What are your plans for today? Are you running off to your ladies group?”
Bea shook her head, “Not today, Papa. I think I will get some correspondence done and perhaps go to the lending library. Is there anything you would like me to do?”
The Baron smiled, “You are a good daughter and do far too much for an old man like me. I am devilish proud of you, Bea.”
“Papa, I have told you a thousand times, you are not old.” Bea passed him the scones, “Are you still having trouble working on your book?”
The Baron had been researching Spirogyra, which is a scientific name for pond algae. “No, I think I’ve made a breakthrough regarding the growth on stagnant water versus damp wood.”
“Fascinating,” Bea’s eyes danced.
“You don’t give a damn about pond scum,” the Baron’s rusty laugh warmed Bea’s, heart.
“Not even a little bit, but I am happy that you are happy,” Bea’s laughter rang out throughout the room.
The Baron was just about to respond, when Alfonzo, their butler announced that Lord Bosworth and Lady Cavanaugh were waiting in the front parlor.
“Would you like me to come?”
Bea glanced at her father, who looked like he would rather eat broken glass. “No, Papa, do not trouble yourself. I was expecting a visit.”
The Baron leaned over a took her hand, “I may not like company, but if you need me there I will escort you.
